Academy History
The Waterpark Rugby Academy was established in 2007 to provide a comprehensive development programme for elite rugby players. The aim of the Academy is to build on the recent Munster Cup successes of our youth teams by encouraging our young players to continue their development with Waterpark. We also aim to identify and attract elite players from the region who would like to develop their rugby skills as members of the Academy.

The Academy aims to identify and develop potential AIL under-twenty and senior players who will be equipped with the skills and competencies required to succeed both on and off the pitch. Waterpark has established strong supportive links with Waterford Institute of Technology and this saw the Institute win the all Ireland O'Boyle Cup for college freshers last season. The Academy will strengthen the collaboration with W.I.T to provide an holistic approach to the development of players' rugby, academic and life skills.

Speaking at the launch of the programme, Ben Cronin outlined the benefits to Waterpark, rugby in the region and to the participating players. The generous three year sponsorship agreement with Ulster Bank will underpin and support the efforts of the team. The Academy coaching and management team was looking forward to building on past success to providing the best of coaching, facilities, conditioning programmes, mentoring, medical and dietary advice to all our academy players.

The benefits that the Academy can offer players include:
  • A programme that is structured to enable the elite player to maximise his potential and to offer exposure at representative level.
  • Very high standards of coaching and fitness training in terms of strength, power, endurance and speed, supported by Munster branch structures.
  • Nutrition advice together with injury prevention and management techniques.
  • Individual development programme for players based on strengths, weaknesses and skill deficits with one-to-one assistance.
  • Supervision and feedback that will motivate and encourage the player to maximise his development and achieve performance goals.
  • The programme offers all quality players studying in W.I.T. an opportunity to play rugby with the only Senior Club in the South East.
  • Financial support to elite players.
  • Rugby Scholarship scheme with Waterford Institute of Technology.
  • Access to the Waterpark career mentoring programme.

Ulster Bank is delighted to be the principal sponsor of the Waterpark Academy for the next three years.

This year in Waterpark we have seen the benefits of the coaching of our under age teams bearing fruit with the success of the clubs under 18's, and under 16's. Two club members, Murray Kinsella and Paul Molloy, were selected for the Irish Youths and a number of our successful under 18's were selected for Munster. This is a terrific achievement for those involved and it is important that this type of talent is retained by the club going forward.

Speaking at the launch of the Academy in May 2007, Mr. Ken Keehan of the Ulster Bank stated that the development of the Academy will ensure a bright future for Waterpark’s senior teams going forward and that Ulster Bank would like to wish all those involved every success in the future.
